Guterres warns of Israel’s plan
alarm over the Israeli government's decision to "take control of Gaza City"
Stephane Dujarric (Guterres’ spokesman) stressed that the UN Secretary-General is “gravely concerned” and stresses that this decision marks a dangerous escalation, which risks worsening the already devastating consequences for millions of Palestinians, while it could further endanger lives, including those of the remaining hostages.
“Palestinians in Gaza continue to suffer a humanitarian catastrophe of enormous proportions. The Secretary-General warns that this further escalation will lead to additional displacement, casualties and mass destruction, exacerbating the unimaginable suffering of the Palestinian population in Gaza,” Dujarric said. The Secretary-General reiterated his urgent appeal for a permanent ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access throughout Gaza, and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.
Guterres also stressed his call for the Government of Israel to comply with its obligations under international law. He underlined that the International Court of Justice, in its Opinion of 19 July 2024, stated, inter alia, that the State of Israel has the obligation to immediately cease all new settlement activities and to expeditiously withdraw all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory, as well as to end its illegal presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory – which includes Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem – as soon as possible.
“Mr. Guterres stresses that there will be no sustainable solution to this conflict without an end to this illegal occupation and the achievement of a viable two-state solution. Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a Palestinian State,” Dujarric stressed in his statement.
